Rupeni Kabu has set his sights on being selected for another HSBC SVNS series leg in 2025. The 27-year-old aims to earn a spot in head coach Osea Kolinisau’s team during upcoming tournaments next year. His last appearance on the world stage was during the 2023 Dubai Sevens, which marked not only his debut in the series but also followed his strong performance in the Oceania and Pacific Games earlier that same year.
Kabu acknowledges the extensive sacrifices and hard work required to be included in the extended squad, describing participation in the selection process as a significant accomplishment. “Being in the wider squad is a big achievement itself. It’s every young rugby player’s dream to be here – to play among the best players on the national side, and I hope I get another chance in one of the legs,” he expressed. In addition to his aspirations for national selection, he also harbors dreams of securing an overseas contract.
His journey in rugby began with the Natakali Sharks, a local team in Naiborebore, Tailevu, before he progressed to Northland in the Vodafone Vanua Championship and later joined the Police Blues sevens team. Kabu expressed his gratitude for the mentorship provided by senior players like Sevuloni Mocenacagi, Suliano Volivolituevei, and Waisea Nacuqu, as well as the influence of assistant coach Viliame Satala, whom he admired while growing up.
“I have learned a lot from the seasoned players, especially regarding discipline, and I would like to follow in their footsteps to inspire the next generation,” Kabu stated. The national sevens squad has resumed their Daily Training Exercise (DTE) following the Christmas break and is set to enter training camp next week. Kolinisau is expected to announce the squad for the McDonald’s Fiji Coral Coast Sevens scheduled for January 16-18 at Lawaqa Park, Sigatoka, before selecting the team for the Perth Sevens from January 24-26.
Overall, Kabu’s dedication and vision highlight the spirit of resilience and aspiration inherent in sports, serving as an inspiring narrative for young athletes in the region. As the national team gears up for the upcoming competitions, there is a hopeful anticipation for Kabu’s contributions and achievements in the future.
