A police officer has been charged with multiple counts of sexual assault and rape involving a minor relative. According to a media update from the police, the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) has approved the charges.

Assistant Commissioner of Police Crime Mesake Waqa reported that the alleged offenses took place between 2019 and 2023. The accused is said to have assaulted the victim on several occasions at different locations in the Central and Eastern divisions.

The case was investigated by the Sexual Offenses Unit of the Criminal Investigations Department, and after the investigation, independent legal guidance was sought from the ODPP. Based on that advice, the police officer faces nine counts of sexual assault, three counts of rape, and one count of defilement of a person aged between 13 and 16.

The accused made an appearance at the Nasinu Magistrate’s Court yesterday.
