Justice Under Scrutiny: Controversial Appointment Raises Ethical Concerns

Opposition MP Premila Kumar has expressed concerns over the appointment of John Rabuku as Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions, citing his previous suspension and fine for professional misconduct by the Independent Legal Services Commission. Kumar highlighted that the recent Attorney General, who serves as the government’s chief legal adviser, has endorsed this appointment, which, according to her, was not sanctioned by the Judicial Services Commission or the Attorney General’s office.

Kumar raised serious concerns about the implications for the integrity and credibility of the justice system, suggesting that this move indicates a deterioration in standards for vetting candidates with past disciplinary issues. She emphasized that such an appointment could diminish public trust in legal and prosecutorial processes.

“Was the vetting for such a critical position thorough and transparent? Appointing someone with a questionable record conveys the wrong message—that ethical standards are no longer prioritized in our legal institutions,” Kumar asserted.

She questioned the public’s ability to uphold the rule of law when those responsible for enforcing it appear to have faltered. Kumar further speculated whether the appointment reflects personal connections and favoritism, hinting at potential motivations tied to the Acting DPP’s promotion.

Kumar pointed out the inconsistency in the hiring standards, noting that applicants for civil service roles typically undergo rigorous police clearance and character checks, which seemingly were overlooked in Rabuku’s case. She concluded by stressing the importance of critically evaluating this appointment to prevent any erosion of public confidence in the justice system.
