The High Court in Lautoka has concluded a lengthy six-year legal process by finding a man guilty of raping a minor relative in 2018. Justice Aruna Aluthge delivered the ruling last week, confirming the man’s guilt for the crime that occurred on a beach six years ago.

During the proceedings, the man, who faced charges of rape and assault with intent to commit rape, initially maintained his innocence. However, after a thorough trial, the court determined that the prosecution had successfully established the man’s culpability beyond a reasonable doubt.

The incident, which took place on September 10, 2018, occurred when the victim, now 19 years old, was visiting her uncle’s home. The court has yet to announce a sentencing date for the offender.

This case underscores the importance of perseverance in seeking justice for victims of sexual violence, demonstrating that the legal system, though sometimes slow, ultimately aims to hold offenders accountable for their actions. There is hope that such prosecutions will encourage more survivors to come forward and ensure that justice is served in a timely manner moving forward.
