A woman is urgently seeking justice for her brother, Tabweranibwe Tarawa, who was allegedly attacked with an axe while asleep on a fishing vessel in Tonga last Saturday morning. The brutal assault, reportedly executed by another Fijian man, followed a heated argument between the two. Tarawa has since sustained severe injuries that have placed him in a coma at a local hospital.
His sister, Soto Elizabeth Taraua, is calling for intervention from authorities in Fiji to assist in bringing her brother home. She was devastated to learn of the attack and described the moment she received the news, stating, “I was told that my brother was in a coma after he was allegedly axed.” Despite the dire circumstances, Taraua remains hopeful for her brother’s recovery and believes that the perpetrator must face justice.
The violent incident occurred around 4 a.m., and Tarawa was quickly transported to a nearby hospital, where he continues to fight for his life. Ms. Taraua recounted that her brother was attacked in his room after the argument had subsided, emphasizing, “My brother was asleep in his room after the argument when the alleged accused hit him with the axe on his face.”
Concerns are growing regarding how local authorities handle such incidents involving Fijian citizens abroad. Police confirmed that the case would be managed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, yet attempts to gather comments from relevant officials have gone unanswered.
This tragic case not only highlights the immediate need for justice for Tarawa but also raises important questions about the protection and support available to Fijian nationals facing violence overseas. It is a poignant reminder of the potential for violence that can arise from conflicts and the critical need for effective intervention and support systems for those affected.
The family’s call for action may also serve to highlight broader issues of accountability and assistance for Fijians abroad, igniting discussions around the responsibilities of authorities in protecting their citizens. There remains a glimmer of hope that this situation can lead to meaningful dialogue and improvements in how such cases are addressed in the future.
