The High Court in Lautoka has finally reached a verdict after a lengthy six-year legal battle concerning a case of rape involving a minor. Justice Aruna Aluthge delivered the judgment last week, declaring the defendant guilty of raping his relative on a beach in 2018.
The accused, who had initially pleaded not guilty, faced one count each of rape and assault with intent to commit rape. Following a comprehensive trial, the prosecution was able to present sufficient evidence to convince the court of the man’s guilt.
Now 19 years old, the victim was only a minor at the time of the incident that occurred during a visit to her uncle’s home on September 10, 2018. The court has yet to determine a sentencing date for the perpetrator.
This case highlights the challenges of the judicial system and the long journey many victims face in seeking justice. However, the court’s decision reinforces the commitment to accountability, reflecting the importance of protecting the rights of vulnerable individuals in society. It serves as a reminder of the need for continued advocacy and support for survivors of sexual violence.
As the community reflects on this verdict, it is hopeful that it will inspire further awareness about sexual abuse and encourage a stronger collective response to prevent such incidents in the future.
