Vilikesa Bari, a 21-year-old student at the Fiji Maritime Academy, is currently recovering in Wainibokasi Hospital after reportedly being assaulted by a police officer in Nausori last Saturday. This incident has left him with significant injuries, including a broken jaw that required surgery. Bari was on the brink of beginning a six-month seagoing service, a necessary step before his graduation, which has now been postponed due to his condition.
In recounting the event, Bari explained that he and his brother were waiting for transport home after attending a family function when a fight erupted nearby. Concerned for his cousin, who was targeted in the altercation, Bari attempted to get the attention of a nearby police officer by tapping his shoulder and asking for assistance. However, he claims that the officer misinterpreted his gesture as disrespectful, leading to his subsequent assault.
Bari described disturbing details of the beating he endured, stating that he tried to apologize multiple times to the officer, but the situation escalated. It was only when a second officer intervened that the assault ceased. He expressed his disbelief at the officer’s actions, recalling a conversation where the officer downplayed his behavior by attributing it to stress.
Bari’s mother, Unaisi Qionimacawa, expressed her shock and relief that her son survived the assault, reflecting on the potential severity of the situation. She stated her unwavering support for her son’s pursuit of justice.
In response to the incident, Acting Commissioner of Police Juki Fong Chew has initiated an investigation into the claims against the officer involved. He reassured the public that proper procedures would be followed, emphasizing the police force’s commitment to uphold the law.
This incident highlights the importance of accountability within law enforcement and the ongoing need for thorough investigations to ensure justice is served. Vilikesa Bari’s determination to seek justice may inspire others who have faced similar experiences to come forward, fostering a culture of transparency and accountability. It is hoped that this incident will lead to improvements in police training and conduct, ultimately enhancing public trust in law enforcement.
