Minister for Justice and former Attorney-General Siromi Turaga testified at the special tribunal hearing concerning suspended Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Christopher Pryde in Suva today. Turaga, who has also filed a complaint against Pryde, expressed concerns regarding a prolonged conversation between Pryde and former Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, which lasted over 40 minutes.
The tribunal is examining allegations of misconduct to determine whether Pryde should be removed from his position as DPP. Evidence presented included a conversation on February 28, 2023, during which Sayed-Khaiyum was under investigation by the Criminal Investigation Department, with the case file already in the hands of Pryde’s office.
Moreover, it was revealed that Pryde was receiving a monthly payment of $1,000 as superannuation without the necessary approvals from the Judicial Services Commission, the Office of the Attorney-General, or the Office of the President as of December 4, 2023.
Turaga outlined that both Pryde and Sayed-Khaiyum appeared isolated from other attendees at the Japanese Emperor’s birthday celebration in February 2023, indicating that Sayed-Khaiyum seemed to dominate the discussion while Pryde appeared to concur. This behavior drew the attention of Turaga as well as several other officials present at the event, prompting him to discuss the situation with Pryde the following day.
When questioned about his characterization of their conversation as “unethical and unbecoming,” Turaga linked it to the ongoing investigation concerning Sayed-Khaiyum’s alleged misuse of power. He noted the long-standing relationship between Pryde and Sayed-Khaiyum, suggesting that their interaction was inappropriate given the circumstances.
After his meeting with Turaga, Pryde reportedly downplayed the conversation’s significance and took a lackadaisical attitude toward its potential ramifications. Recognizing the gravity of the situation, Pryde later acknowledged his poor judgment in the matter and submitted a letter of apology, which Turaga modified into a formal complaint to the Judicial Services Commission on March 29, 2023.
The tribunal proceedings saw representation from various legal counsels, and the matter has been adjourned until tomorrow, with expectations of summoning six witnesses.
