Minister for Justice Siromi Turaga has sparked controversy by referring to the media’s coverage of the FICAC (Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption) situation as an “obsession.” During a recent session in Parliament, he was questioned about the ongoing FICAC debate and responded by questioning the focus on the issue, stating, “What’s this obsession with this FICAC controversy?” He also dismissed allegations of ministerial interference in the matter.
FICAC has been under scrutiny for months, particularly concerning the appointment of Barbara Malimali as commissioner. At the time of her appointment, she was still under investigation by FICAC. President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere made the appointment based on recommendations from the Judicial Service Commission, with input from Government legal adviser Graham Leung. Both the Judicial Service Commission and the Government have stood by the appointment process.
Former Prime Minister Mahendra Chaudhry has criticized current Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka for his delayed response to the ongoing scandal. Today, Cabinet members are expected to discuss an agenda related to a Commission of Inquiry (COI) aimed at investigating the discrepancies surrounding the FICAC controversy during their meeting at the Office of the Prime Minister.
