Justice Minister Calls FICAC Controversy an ‘Obsession’

The Minister for Justice, Siromi Turaga, has sparked controversy within the Coalition Government by describing media coverage of the FICAC (Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption) situation as an “obsession.” This remark came after he was approached by reporters in Parliament last week for his insights on the ongoing FICAC controversy.

With little hesitation, Mr. Turaga questioned, “What’s this obsession with this FICAC controversy?” He also dismissed any allegations of ministerial interference in the matter. The FICAC has been a focal point of public interest for several months, primarily due to the appointment of its commissioner, Barbara Malimali, who was reportedly under investigation by FICAC at the time of her selection.

Ms. Malimali’s appointment was made by President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere following recommendations from the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) in consultation with the Government’s legal advisor, Graham Leung. Both entities have supported the legitimacy of the appointment process.

Former Prime Minister Mahendra Chaudhry has criticized current Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka for failing to respond quickly to the escalating controversy. Today’s Cabinet meeting at the Office of the Prime Minister is set to address the agenda, which includes a proposal for a Commission of Inquiry (COI) to investigate the inconsistencies surrounding the FICAC issue.
