Justice in Jeopardy? Calls to Remove FICAC Head Amid Investigation

The Fiji Labour Party has expressed strong opposition to Barbara Malimali taking on the role of head of FICAC while she is currently under investigation. In a statement, party leader and former Prime Minister Mahendra Chaudhry emphasized that Malimali should resign as Commissioner of FICAC until the allegations of abuse of office against her are fully examined by unbiased officials.

Chaudhry pointed out that Malimali is under arrest and being interrogated regarding these complaints. He also raised concerns about the close relationship between Malimali and Attorney General Graham Leung, citing that in April 2024, she recommended Leung for the position of Supervisor of Elections while serving as Chairperson of the Electoral Commission.

Chaudhry further highlighted that Malimali’s appointment is questionable, particularly since she represented Jason Zong in court, who is facing bribery charges brought by FICAC.
