A man convicted of sexually assaulting his daughter multiple times has been sentenced to 13 years in prison, with a minimum of 12 years to be served before he can apply for parole. This ruling was made by Justice Pita Bulamainaivalu in the High Court of Suva last Wednesday.
The 44-year-old man faced two charges of rape and three counts of sexual assault against his daughter, which took place from December 1, 2017, when she was 15, until December 31, 2020, when she turned 18. He is married and has six children, and the offenses occurred in their home while other family members were asleep.
Court documents indicate that the crimes were uncovered only after the girl’s mother questioned her about potential misconduct by her father. Following the revelations, the accused expressed remorse and promised to cease his actions, yet he repeated the offenses in 2020.
