Justice Delayed: The Call for Accountability After Fiji’s Ferris Wheel Tragedy

Fiji Labour Party leader Mahendra Chaudhry is continuing to call for action regarding the tragic ferris wheel accident that occurred at the Fiji Showcase event in Suva, which resulted in the death of 21-year-old Komal Kumar and left two other women severely injured. Despite 17 months passing since the incident, there has been minimal progress in the investigation, prompting Chaudhry to express his concerns about accountability.

Chaudhry questioned the absence of a detailed report on the accident after such an extended period and raised concerns whether authorities were attempting to shield someone involved. He criticized various agencies, including the Employment Ministry and the Police, for seemingly shifting responsibility rather than providing justice.

He noted that it took six months for Employment Minister Agni Deo Singh’s Occupational Health and Safety team to compile a report recommending possible charges, which was submitted to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) in December last year. However, since then, the case appears to have stagnated, with the DPP awaiting further information from the Police.

Chaudhry indicated that the inaction over the past 17 months has led to frustration, as no charges have been filed and no one has been held accountable for the incident. He emphasized that it is now essential for Minister Singh to utilize the Labour Inspection and Compliance Unit’s powers to pursue legal action against those responsible.

This situation highlights the challenges of ensuring accountability and transparency in governance and public safety matters. While the delays are troubling, there remains hope that sustained pressure from leaders like Chaudhry will lead to action and ensure that such incidents are thoroughly investigated to prevent future tragedies.

In summary, the call to action from Chaudhry aims not just for justice for the victims but also serves as a reminder of the importance of rigorous oversight in public safety to protect individuals in similar scenarios.
