Fiji Labour Party leader Mahendra Chaudhry is calling for immediate action regarding the unresolved investigation into a tragic ferris wheel accident that took place at the Fiji Showcase event in Suva, which resulted in the death of 21-year-old Komal Kumar and serious injuries to two other women. Despite the accident occurring 17 months ago, there has been little progress, raising concerns about accountability and the efficiency of the investigation.
Chaudhry expressed frustration, stating, “Why has a report on the fatal accident not been released 17 months into the incident?” He questioned whether individuals responsible for the tragedy are being protected and criticized various agencies, including the Employment Ministry, Police, and the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) office, for their inaction. According to him, the delay in reporting and potential charges suggests a troubling pattern of negligence.
The Employment Ministry took a significant six months to compile a report on the accident, which was eventually forwarded to the DPP in December of the previous year, with a recommendation for charges. However, the DPP has reportedly been unable to proceed, citing the need for a police report, which has yet to be provided even after multiple follow-ups.
Chaudhry emphasized the importance of action from Minister Agni Deo Singh, urging him to utilize the powers of the Labour Inspection and Compliance Unit (LICU) to move forward with prosecuting those responsible for the incident. He condemned the prolonged delay, stating that after 17 months, there has been no accountability or charges brought forward against anyone involved.
This situation highlights the challenges faced in ensuring timely justice and accountability in cases of public safety failures. It also underscores the need for coordinated efforts among various agencies to effectively address such incidents and support the affected parties. With growing public concern and advocacy from leaders like Chaudhry, there remains hope that this investigation will gain momentum, leading to justice for the victims and their families.
In summary, the need for transparency and accountability in this tragic case is pressing, and the continued calls for action may help bring about the necessary changes for justice to be served.
