Justice David Ashton-Lewis, the Sole Commissioner of Inquiry, has urged the media to maintain fairness and accuracy in their reporting, particularly in light of recent comments from Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka regarding his testimony. Rabuka expressed his discontent over media descriptions of his experience in the inquiry, specifically the term “grilling,” which Justice Ashton-Lewis felt was an inadequate representation of the situation.

In response, Justice Ashton-Lewis clarified that while the questions posed to Rabuka were challenging, he handled them exceptionally well. “He wasn’t given a grilling. The questions were tough, and he answered them perfectly,” Justice Ashton-Lewis remarked, underlining the professionalism expected from someone with Rabuka’s extensive background.

Rabuka reaffirmed his dedication to the inquiry process but stated he would refrain from further comments until the Commission concludes its work. He also mentioned that the timeline for the inquiry could be extended if necessary, emphasizing the importance of thoroughness and fairness in these proceedings.

The inquiry, which focuses on the appointment of Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) Commissioner Barbara Malimali, aims to promote accountability and transparency within Fiji’s governance framework. As the investigation unfolds, it is pivotal in restoring public trust in governmental institutions and strengthening ethical standards in public appointments.

Justice Ashton-Lewis acknowledged the integrity exhibited by witnesses participating in the inquiry and mentioned that some were providing testimony virtually due to logistical challenges, particularly for those coming from New Zealand and Australia. He expressed appreciation for their cooperation, noting that so far, there are “no suspicions of lies” among witnesses.

This ongoing inquiry marks a hopeful step towards enhancing governance in Fiji. With continued dedication to transparency and accountability, there is optimism that the Commission’s findings will culminate in meaningful reforms, ultimately leading to a more trustworthy political environment.
