Justice David Ashton-Lewis, the Sole Commissioner of Inquiry, has emphasized the importance of fairness and accuracy in media reporting in light of Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka’s concerns about his portrayal during recent testimony. The Prime Minister expressed his discomfort over media descriptions of his experience as a “grilling,” which did not reflect the nature of the questioning he faced.
Justice Ashton-Lewis clarified, “He wasn’t given a grilling. The questions were tough, and he answered them perfectly,” underscoring the level of professionalism expected from someone of Rabuka’s extensive background. He urged the media to reconsider their coverage, noting that accurate reporting is essential to convey the realities of the inquiry.
Rabuka has affirmed his commitment to the inquiry process but refrained from providing further comments until the Commission has concluded its work. He acknowledged the possibility of extending the inquiry’s timeline if deemed necessary, highlighting the need for thoroughness in the investigation.
This inquiry focuses on the appointment of Barbara Malimali as Commissioner of the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) and aims to promote both accountability and transparency within Fiji’s governance structures. Justice Ashton-Lewis has also praised the integrity of witnesses, stating there are currently “no suspicions of lies” observed, a sentiment echoed throughout the proceedings.
Witness participation has included virtual testimonies, reflecting a practical approach to overcoming logistical challenges, especially for those traveling from abroad. The inquiry is seen as a significant step toward restoring public trust in governmental institutions and enhancing the ethical framework within Fiji’s political landscape.
As this investigation unfolds, there is hope that the dedication to transparency and integrity will lead to meaningful reforms, fostering a more accountable and trustworthy governance in Fiji. The commitment shown during these proceedings reflects a collective effort to strengthen public confidence in the nation’s institutions.
