President Wiliame Katonivere emphasized the significance of reflection during his address at the Judicial Officers Workshop held in Nadi over the weekend. Throughout his three-year tenure as Head of State, he noted a number of developments within the Judiciary sector, which he has observed while attending various events and engagements.
In his speech, President Katonivere acknowledged the privilege of gathering with Judicial Officers to discuss advancements in their field and to enhance professional connections moving forward. He highlighted the Judiciary’s crucial role as a branch of government, stressing the importance of regularly assessing both achievements and challenges faced throughout their journey.
“Reflection allows us to critically assess our decisions and actions, providing the chance to bolster our way forward,” he stated, underscoring that such reflection ensures that future decisions are informed and purposeful as they continue to serve their communities and the nation.
He also pointed out the need for Judicial Officers to reflect on their roles as champions of the rule of law, reminding them that they are entrusted with public trust and carry a significant responsibility inherent to their profession. Guiding their work by principles of integrity and dignity is paramount, according to the President.
“In a profession deeply rooted in law, it is your duty to uphold the rule of law and guarantee access to justice for all citizens,” he stressed, noting that impartiality, fairness, and judicial efficiency are vital foundations of a democratic society.
Reiterating the Judiciary’s Vision Statement of maintaining an independent and impartial judicial system, he added that commitment to accountability is also a crucial aspect of this mission. He urged the officers to be conscientious in their decision-making processes, advocating for transparency.
The President also called for maintaining checks and balances to ensure adherence to the rule of law and to preserve the integrity of a fair judicial system. He encouraged officers to enhance collaboration with international partners and regional stakeholders, suggesting the use of available resources, such as expertise, technological advancements, and continuous training, to improve standards both individually and as an organization.
He concluded by urging the judiciary professionals to learn from one another and to apply those lessons with the integrity characteristic of their profession, as they work towards the common goal of an efficient judicial system.
