Chief Justice Salesi Temo was recently seen at the venue for the ongoing Commission of Inquiry (COI) at the Old Parliament Complex in Veiuto, Suva. This marks the fourth day of proceedings, which center on the controversial appointment of Barbara Malimali as the Commissioner of the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC). Ms. Malimali, who took office on September 5, 2024, has faced scrutiny from political analysts and members of the Opposition regarding the legality and integrity of the process that led to her selection.
When approached for comments, Justice Temo indicated that changes to the schedule may have occurred, stating, “Probably they have changed the schedule, I’ll have to be informed later.” His appearance at the COI is expected tomorrow.
Despite the presence of 35 witnesses, the planned schedule has been disrupted as witnesses elaborate extensively on their testimonies to the inquiry.
This inquiry is a significant step toward transparency and accountability within FICAC, emphasizing the importance of due process in governmental appointments. As proceedings continue, there is hope that the COI will provide clarity and restore public trust in Fiji’s institutions.
