Journey to Leadership: Ratu Naiqama’s Inspiring Rise to Presidency

Delai Naiqasiqasi will officially welcome a new leader today as Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, Tui Cakau, is set to assume his role following a ceremonial inauguration at State House this morning.

Ratu Naiqama’s political journey, including his time as Speaker of the House of Representatives, is well-documented, but few are aware of the challenges he faced early in life. Hailing from humble beginnings, he showcased an unwavering determination to succeed, as shared by friends who knew him well. His upbringing in the suburbs of Suva and later in Somosomo village, Taveuni, reflects a resilient character that has been evident throughout his life.

Raised by his mother, Adi Unaisi Lalabalavu, while his father, Ratu Glanville Wellington Lalabalavu, served military duty fighting against communist guerillas in Malaya, Ratu Naiqama experienced a unique upbringing. His journey continued in Raiwaqa, Suva, before progressing to education at Suva Methodist Primary School, Dudley Intermediate, and Ratu Sukuna Memorial School, where he completed his secondary education.

After finishing school, he settled in a bachelor’s quarters in Draiba and began his career at the Native Land Trust Board, excelling in land and estate management. Friends and colleagues, such as Savenaca Kamikamica, recognized Ratu Naiqama’s potential for greatness long ago.

His academic pursuits took him to prestigious institutions, including a Master’s Degree in International Development from Clark University in Massachusetts, a Post Graduate Diploma in Integrated Rural or Regional Development Planning from Israel, and a stint at Harvard University. Many see his rise from Ratu Sukuna Memorial School to the presidency of Fiji as a testament to his dedication to serving the people.

Kamikamica noted that Ratu Naiqama’s ability to connect with individuals from all backgrounds makes him particularly suited for the presidency. He has always treated everyone equally, from prestigious chiefly households to everyday farmers who sought his assistance.

Ratu Naiqama also had a promising rugby career and was even selected for trials with the national team, showcasing his multidimensional talents.
