Levuka thrived in the mid-19th century as a bustling hub for missionaries, European traders, and settlers, all contributing to the town’s development. It was during this dynamic period that four Roman Catholic Marist Fathers arrived in Levuka, motivated to spread their faith and educate local communities on Ovalau Island.
Recognizing the necessity for a place of worship and learning, the missionaries chose Mission Hill for their activities. The steps are believed to have been constructed shortly after the mission was established in 1858.
Luke Tikomaisiga, a 71-year-old resident of Levuka, recalls stories about the steps passed down from previous generations. “The missionaries were determined to create a path that resonated with their spiritual journey, which is why they built the staircase of 199 steps,” Tikomaisiga shared.
Constructed from local materials by hand, the steps reflect the craftsmanship and dedication of both the missionaries and local inhabitants. Tikomaisiga’s grandfather conveyed that these steps symbolize the arduous journey the missionaries undertook in their mission to bring the Gospel to the people.
The steps provided access to the Mission Hill site, where Fiji’s first Roman Catholic mission was established. Over time, the 199 steps have become emblematic of Levuka’s distinct history. Even after the capital moved to Suva in 1882, the steps remain a steadfast tribute to the early days of Christianity.
Locals and visitors often ascend the steps not only to enjoy breathtaking views of Levuka but also to connect with the town’s historical roots. Market vendor Aloesi Raiviti emphasizes their cultural significance. “They remind us of the town’s colonial past and its role in spreading the Gospel throughout the Pacific,” Raiviti stated.
As time has passed, the 199 steps have borne witness to notable events in Levuka’s history. Generations have honored these steps, which serve as a bridge connecting Levuka’s colonial legacy with its contemporary identity.
Efforts are underway to preserve the steps as a vital element of Levuka’s historical heritage, recognizing the town as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Adjacent to the steps lie the remains of the old Catholic mission and a small historic chapel.
Today, the 199 steps of Mission Hill stand as a treasured landmark, inviting visitors to explore and contemplate the past. They offer more than just a physical climb; they represent a journey through history, with each step resonating with the legacy of those who came before.
