“Journey of Heritage: Suva’s Own Semantafa Lavulo-Samisoni Bids for Miss Hibiscus 2024”

The rich cultural heritage and lively community of Suva have inspired Semantafa Naomi Lavulo-Samisoni to compete for the 2024 Miss Hibiscus title. The 27-year-old graphic designer, sponsored by local fashion brand Hefrani, is one of ten contenders for the prestigious title at this year’s 68th festival anniversary.

Semantafa’s connection to Suva is profound, deeply rooted in her family’s long history in the city. Although she lives in Nadi, Suva holds a special place in her heart, filled with cherished memories. Both of her parents were raised in Suva, where her childhood holidays were spent immersed in the city’s vibrancy.

She recalls joyful times spent painting with her uncle, playing with cousins, and participating in various sports like swimming, hockey, squash, and paddling competitions. To her, Suva was a hub of joy, family, and continuous activity. She fondly reminisces about playing card games with her grandparents and enjoying family gatherings at her uncle’s home, describing the city as always bustling with excitement.

One of her favorite activities was taking afternoon drives along the seawall, captivated by the sunsets and the vibrant scene of families exercising and children playing rugby and basketball. The aquatic center’s expansive swimming pool and the nearby hockey turf left a significant impression on her, as they were distinct from facilities in Nadi.

Semantafa highlighted the emotional impact of Rotuma Day, reminiscing about witnessing her family’s participation in traditional dances. With her mother’s family rooted in Tongan and Chinese Fijian heritage, Semantafa feels a deep cultural connection whenever she visits Suva.

Her first modeling experience at Fiji Fashion Week in Suva marked a crucial turning point in her life, instilling her with confidence. The people of Suva, known for their trendsetting ways, continually inspire her with their bold expressions through various art forms, from painting to dancing and tailoring.

“The sense of community and my family’s rich culture in Suva made me feel like I truly belonged. This city, filled with activity and deep family ties, will always hold a special place in my heart,” she expressed.

The Miss Hibiscus festival, scheduled to be held at the Suva Civic Foreshore and Suva Civic Centre from August 31 to September 7, promises to be a vibrant celebration of tradition, culture, and community. With FMF and Vodafone on board as Gold Sponsors, this year’s festival is expected to be an unforgettable event.
