Joint Operation Seizes Suspicious Consignments in Fiji – Investigations Underway

A coordinated operation between the Fiji Police Force and Fiji Revenue and Customs Service resulted in the capture of shipments from British Columbia, Canada, containing equipment potentially used for a clandestine lab.

Acting Commissioner of Police Juki Fong Chew stated that task forces from the Western and Eastern Divisions, alongside the Fiji Detector Dog Unit, intercepted the consignment at a warehouse in Nadi on Friday.

He mentioned that analysis conducted on substances found in several containers came back negative for illegal substances.

However, considering that the substances are known medications and also known precursors, investigations are now focusing on the aspect of manufacturing.

The Acting Commissioner noted that this manufacturing angle is being scrutinized due to the discovery of numerous cartons containing equipment and apparatuses typically used in the production of illicit drugs.

He emphasized the importance of this seizure, highlighting ongoing efforts to combat illicit drugs in all forms, including unlawful possession, cultivation, importation, and manufacturing.

Chew added that six individuals have been detained for questioning as the investigation continues.

“The investigation is still at the early stages, and more people are expected to be questioned soon.”
