Join the Fight: Koronivia’s Cleanup Campaign Sparks Call for Waste Responsibility

Amitesh Deo, the chief executive of the Pacific Recycling Foundation, emphasized that waste management is a shared responsibility among all citizens. His remarks followed a cleanup campaign that collected a total of 596 kilograms of general waste and recyclables along Koronivia Road in Nausori last Friday.

The cleanup was organized by the Foundation in collaboration with Waste Recyclers Fiji Limited, Malhana Cloud Kitchen, the Koronivia Business Council, and local residents. The effort began at the Koronivia Roundabout and extended to the Shiv Krish Temple on Kabutri Drive. This region has faced ongoing issues with significant amounts of waste being irresponsibly discarded, impacting both the environment and community health.

Deo highlighted that the quantity of waste collected in just two hours indicates the pressing need to shift away from a throwaway culture and encourages individuals to take responsibility for their waste. He stressed the importance of keeping Koronivia clean and green for future generations.

During the cleanup, a variety of household waste and recyclables were uncovered, including baby diapers, PET bottles, construction debris, beer bottles and cans, takeaway food containers, clothing, razors, and cartons filled with unused items. Many of these items were found obstructing drains, particularly after recent grass-cutting efforts by the Fiji Roads Authority.

Deo expressed regret that some waste had to be left behind due to the inaccessibility of the soggy drains and the potential hazards of sharp objects that could pose a risk to volunteers. The campaign yielded 500 kilograms of general waste, 60 kilograms of PET bottles, and 36 kilograms of aluminum cans, reflecting a worrying increase in waste disposal in the area compared to past cleanup efforts.

“This initiative is not only about cleaning up; it involves changing mindsets. We urge everyone to evaluate their habits and make environmentally conscious decisions,” said Deo. He also expressed gratitude to the Fiji Police Force for their support in ensuring safety and facilitating traffic flow during the event.
