The Davuilevu community recently embarked on an ambitious clean-up campaign under the motto “Combating littering and crime, one garbage bag at a time.” Organized by the Social and Services Committee of the Peceliemavou Methodist Church, this initiative aimed to instill a sense of social responsibility among the youth and children.
Participants included members of the Fiji Police Force, National Fire Authority, Ministry of Health, and the Nausori Town Council, all of whom played key roles in supporting the campaign. Emosi Vakarua, President of the Social Services Committee, highlighted the dual purpose of the initiative: not only to clean up the environment but also to educate the younger generation on their responsibilities toward it.
This event follows a previous initiative in December last year, where over 2000 mangrove plants were planted at the Royal Suva Yacht Club, marking a sustained effort by the community to positively impact their environment.
Sunil Chand, Officer in Charge of the Nakasi Police Station, emphasized the vital role the public plays in maintaining a healthy living environment. He noted that campaigns like this one serve as reminders for the broader community to prioritize cleanliness and public health, reflecting the adage “health is wealth.”
John Vakarua, who grew up in the church, reiterated the importance of teaching young children about the value of contributing to their community. He expressed hope that such initiatives would inspire children to grow into responsible adults who care for their surroundings instead of engaging in less constructive behaviors.
Looking forward, the Davuilevu community is committed to organizing more outreach activities aimed at reinforcing these essential values among the youth and children. This continuing effort reflects a strong commitment to fostering a clean, safe, and caring environment for all residents.
In summary, the clean-up campaign not only addressed immediate environmental concerns but also worked towards creating a foundation for lifelong values of responsibility and community service among the younger generations.
