Amitesh Deo, the chief executive of the Pacific Recycling Foundation, emphasizes that waste management is a responsibility that must be shared by all citizens. His remarks followed a cleanup campaign that successfully gathered 596 kilograms of general waste and recyclables along Koronivia Road in Nausori on Friday.
The initiative was organized by the Pacific Recycling Foundation in collaboration with Waste Recyclers Fiji Limited, Malhana Cloud Kitchen, the Koronivia Business Council, and local residents. The cleanup started at the Koronivia Roundabout and moved toward the Shiv Krish Temple on Kabutri Drive. This area has faced persistent issues with improper waste disposal, which poses threats to both the environment and community health.
Deo noted, “The volume of waste we collected in just two hours underscores the pressing need for a shift away from a throwaway culture. Everyone must take ownership of their waste to keep Koronivia clean and green for future generations.”
The cleanup revealed a large quantity of household waste and recyclables, including items such as baby diapers, PET bottles, beer bottles and cans, takeaway containers, clothing, razors, and cartons filled with unused products. Many of these items were blocking drains, particularly after recent grass-cutting work conducted by the Fiji Roads Authority.
Deo expressed disappointment that some waste had to be left behind due to the hazardous conditions in the soggy drains, which contained potentially dangerous objects. The effort resulted in the collection of 500 kilograms of general waste, 60 kilograms of PET bottles, and 36 kilograms of aluminum cans, indicating a notable rise in waste compared to earlier cleanup efforts and revealing a concerning disregard for proper waste disposal among both travelers and residents.
“This is not merely about cleaning up; it’s about altering mindsets. We urge everyone to evaluate their habits and make deliberate choices that benefit our environment,” added Deo. He also expressed appreciation to the Fiji Police Force for their support in ensuring safety and smooth traffic flow during the cleanup operation.
