John Rabuku Addresses Calls for His Resignation: Ensuring Smooth Transition at the DPP Office

The Acting Director of Public Prosecutions, John Rabuku, states that the public calls for his resignation by the Attorney General and the President of the Fiji Law Society are attempts to undermine the role of the Judicial Services Commission in this matter.

Rabuku affirms that the Commission understands its responsibilities and has agreed with him on the way forward after two meetings this week. He emphasizes the necessity of following the established process to ensure the continued efficient functioning of the Office of the DPP and to facilitate a smooth transition for the staff and all involved.

When questioned about receiving directives from the Cabinet or the Commission to resign, Rabuku clarifies that the Cabinet does not communicate with him regarding this matter as it is not within their jurisdiction. He has already discussed his exit plan with the Commission, which will make an official announcement.

Rabuku acknowledges that the Supreme Court, being the highest court in the land, has issued an opinion. He remarks that, regardless of his personal agreement with the opinion, it must be adhered to. However, he points out that the opinion does not constitute an order for him to vacate his office, which is why he is awaiting the Commission to follow through with the appropriate procedures now in place.

He underscores the importance for lawyers to thoroughly understand the Supreme Court’s opinion and stresses that senior lawyers must recognize their role within the justice system.
