John Rabuku Addresses Calls for His Resignation and Plans for Departure

The Acting Director of Public Prosecutions, John Rabuku, has accused the Attorney General and the President of the Fiji Law Society of trying to undermine the Judicial Services Commission by calling for his resignation. Rabuku stated that the Commission is aware of its responsibilities and has already discussed the next steps with him in two meetings this week.

Rabuku emphasized that there is a procedure in place for his departure to ensure the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions continues to function smoothly. He mentioned the importance of following this process for the benefit of the staff and overall office stability.

When asked about any communication from the Cabinet or Commission regarding his resignation, Rabuku clarified that the Cabinet does not and will not intervene, as it is not within their purview. He confirmed that he had discussed his departure timeline with the Commission, and it will be the Commission that announces the decided date.

Rabuku also addressed the Supreme Court’s opinion, noting that while personal agreement with the opinion is irrelevant, it must be respected. He pointed out that the opinion does not mandate his immediate departure, which is why it is crucial for the Commission to handle the process appropriately.

Rabuku stressed the importance for lawyers to thoroughly understand the Supreme Court’s opinion and underlined the need for senior lawyers to be aware of their roles within the justice system.
