Jarryd Hayne Returns to Boost Fiji Bati Ahead of Pacific Championship Showdown

Former National Rugby League (NRL) player Jarryd Hayne has stepped in to support the Vodafone Fiji Bati team as they prepare for their upcoming matches in the Pacific Bowl Championship. The Bati’s first match is set for Saturday against the Papua New Guinea (PNG) Kumuls at HFC Bank Stadium in Suva.

Hayne, who has won the Dally M Medal twice, is assisting the team, particularly focusing on their attacking strategies. The Australian native, who hails from Cikobia in Macuata, praised the NRL for organizing this championship, highlighting the significance of Pacific island players within the league.

He emphasized the importance of the Bati players reconnecting with their families and cultural roots. “It’s been a long time coming for something like this to happen,” Hayne remarked, noting that awareness around Aboriginal culture in Australia has grown, which enhances the experience for Fijian players returning to their culture within a team environment.

Despite the Bati’s lineup featuring NRL players, Hayne acknowledged that the Kumuls are a formidable opponent, being the reigning champions of the Pacific Bowl Championship.

“PNG is probably the country in the world who doesn’t matter who they pick, you just know they’re going to be tough. Their culture is rugby league; it’s all about full force – they love running straight and the physical aspect of the game,” he stated. “When they put on the Kumuls jersey, they play with passion. The boys are ready for a tough contest.”

Hayne encouraged rugby league fans and families to come out and support the home team. “There should be plenty of talent on display on Saturday night. You don’t get to see this level of talent in Fiji often, so I urge everyone to attend, experience the atmosphere, and witness what rugby league is all about,” he said, expressing hope that more young Fijians would one day represent the Bati.

Reflecting on the progress of the team, Hayne noted, “It’s been a long journey, going from army barracks almost 16 or 17 years ago to now enjoying five-star accommodations. We’ve come a long way.”

Hayne was released from prison in June after successfully appealing a sexual assault conviction.
