Japan’s Ambassador to Fiji, Michii Rokuichiro, encouraged students at Dreketi Central College (DCC) in Macuata on Friday to embrace their educational opportunities and strive for academic success. The ambassador was present alongside Coalition Government assistant ministers and Minister for Finance, Biman Prasad, during a ceremony to inaugurate three newly built classrooms funded by the Japanese Government.
The construction, which cost $333,784, was made possible through the Japanese Government’s Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP) initiative. Ambassador Rokuichiro noted that these new classrooms symbolize a portal to knowledge and educational advancement. In addition to the classroom funding, the school also received three tables and chairs for teachers, as well as 120 new desks and chairs for students.
Rokuichiro advised the students to responsibly utilize the resources provided to them. He emphasized the strong bilateral relationship between Japan and Fiji, highlighting the consistent support in enhancing education.
Minister Prasad expressed pride in the development of his former school, noting the importance of quality infrastructure for students. He thanked the ambassador, stating that the classroom improvements would be a significant benefit for all students at the college.
Savenaca Vakacego, the school manager, reflected on his commitment over the past seven years to ensure the establishment of cyclone-resistant classrooms. He described the funding from the Japanese government as timely and expressed gratitude on behalf of the community, acknowledging that their support would leave a lasting impact.
The school serves 364 students from Years 9-13 and also operates a technical college.
