Japan’s Ambassador to Fiji, Michii Rokuichiro, emphasized the importance of education during his visit to Dreketi Central College (DCC) in Macuata on Friday. He urged students to embrace the opportunities for knowledge and personal growth provided to them.
The ambassador was joined by assistant ministers from the Coalition Government and Minister for Finance, Biman Prasad, at the handover ceremony for three new classrooms constructed with funding from the Japanese Government. The total grant of $333,784 was allocated through the Japanese Government’s Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP) program.
Rokuichiro noted that the new classrooms symbolize a pathway to educational advancement. In addition to the classrooms, the funding also covered the provision of three tables and chairs for teachers, along with 120 desks and chairs for students.
He encouraged the students to take ownership of the resources available to them and to use them wisely. “We have a strong bilateral relationship with Fiji, and we consistently support the educational sector to enhance this area,” he explained.
Minister Prasad expressed pride in the development of his former school and appreciated the ambassador’s contributions. He asserted that the new classrooms would significantly benefit all students attending the college.
Savenaca Vakacego, the school manager, reflected on his persistent efforts to construct new cyclone-resistant classrooms. Having served as school manager for seven years, he acknowledged the timely support from the Japanese government.
“Your assistance will always be remembered by our community, students, teachers, and parents,” said Vakacego. He noted the importance of patience throughout the process of bringing the project to fruition, highlighting that the school’s roll from Years 9-13 consists of 364 students, with a technical college also in operation.
