Japan’s Ambassador to Fiji, Michii Rokuichiro, encouraged students at Dreketi Central College (DCC) in Macuata to embrace their educational opportunities during a visit on Friday. He emphasized the importance of seizing the chance to gain knowledge and achieve academic growth.
The ambassador’s visit coincided with a ceremony marking the completion of three newly constructed classrooms, funded by the Japanese Government. The total funding for the project amounted to $333,784 through the Japanese Government Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP) programme.
Mr. Rokuichiro described the new classrooms as a pathway to knowledge and educational advancement. In addition to the construction funding, the college also received three teacher tables and chairs, along with 120 desks and chairs for students.
He urged students to take responsibility for the resources provided and to use them wisely. “We have a strong bilateral relationship with Fiji, and we consistently strive to enhance education in this area,” he stated.
Finance Minister Biman Prasad expressed pride in witnessing the improvements to his former school, acknowledging the ambassador’s contributions. He noted that the development of these facilities would benefit all students at the college.
School manager Savenaca Vakacego shared his dedication to ensuring the construction of cyclone-resistant classrooms. Having served as school manager for the past seven years, he found the timing of the Japanese government’s funding to be particularly fortunate.
“Your assistance will never be forgotten by our community, students, teachers, and parents,” Mr. Vakacego remarked. He noted that patience was required from the beginning of the project until it was presented to the Japanese Government. Currently, the school serves 364 students from Years 9-13, and a technical college is also operating on the premises.
