Japan Empowers Fiji’s Future: New Classrooms Open Doors to Knowledge

Japan’s Ambassador to Fiji, Michii Rokuichiro, addressed students at Dreketi Central College (DCC) in Macuata on Friday, encouraging them to embrace the opportunities for knowledge and academic growth offered by the newly constructed classrooms. The occasion marked the handover ceremony of three classrooms funded by the Japanese Government, attended by Coalition Government assistant ministers and the Minister for Finance, Biman Prasad.

The project received funding of $333,784 through the Japanese Government’s Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP) program. Ambassador Rokuichiro highlighted that the new classrooms serve as a doorway to educational advancement. In addition to the classrooms, the funding also provided three tables and chairs for teachers and 120 desks and chairs for students.

Rokuichiro urged students to take responsibility for the resources given to them and to make the most of them. He emphasized the strong bilateral relationship between Fiji and Japan, noting that education is a key area where Japan seeks to support Fiji’s development.

Minister Prasad expressed pride in seeing his former school benefit from improved infrastructure. He thanked the ambassador, stating that the new classrooms would significantly enhance the educational experience for all students at the college.

School manager, Savenaca Vakacego, shared his commitment to ensuring the construction of cyclone-resistant classrooms. With seven years of experience in his role, he acknowledged the timely support from the Japanese government. He expressed gratitude on behalf of the community, students, teachers, and parents, noting that the assistance would be remembered.

He recounted the lengthy process of bringing the project to the attention of the Japanese Government, emphasizing the patience needed throughout. With 364 students enrolled from Years 9 to 13, the college is also operating a technical college.
