Japan Empowers Fijian Students with New Classrooms!

Japan’s Ambassador to Fiji, Michii Rokuichiro, addressed students at Dreketi Central College (DCC) in Macuata on Friday, encouraging them to embrace knowledge and strive for academic success. The ambassador made his remarks during a ceremony marking the handover of three new classrooms financed by the Japanese Government.

The funding amounting to $333,784 was provided through the Japanese Government’s Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP) programme. Rokuichiro emphasized that the newly constructed classrooms symbolize a pathway to knowledge and educational advancement. In addition to the classrooms, three tables and chairs for teachers, along with 120 desks and chairs for students, were also provided.

Rokuichiro urged the students to take ownership of the resources made available to them and use them wisely. He mentioned the strong bilateral relationship between Fiji and Japan, highlighting the ongoing support for educational initiatives.

Finance Minister Biman Prasad expressed pride in witnessing the development of quality infrastructure at his former school, acknowledging the ambassador’s contributions. He noted that the new classrooms would greatly benefit the students attending the college.

School manager Savenaca Vakacego shared his commitment to ensuring the construction of cyclone-resistant classrooms. With seven years of experience in the role, he deemed the Japanese Government’s support as timely and invaluable.

Vakacego conveyed gratitude on behalf of the community, stating, “Your assistance will never be forgotten by our vanua, students, teachers, and parents.” He reflected on the journey of bringing the project to fruition, highlighting the cooperation with the Japanese Government. The school currently caters to 364 students from Years 9-13, and a technical college is also in operation.
