Former Wallabies first-five James O’Connor has signed with the Crusaders for the 2025 Super Rugby Pacific season.
The 34-year-old athlete has represented Australia in 64 tests and amassed over 120 Super Rugby appearances with teams including the Western Force, Melbourne Rebels, and most recently, the Queensland Reds. O’Connor has scored nearly 250 points while playing for his national team.
As a versatile back, he will join the Crusaders as a first-five alongside Rivez Reihana and Taha Kemara. The Canterbury-based franchise hopes O’Connor will not only bring on-field skill but also provide mentorship off the pitch.
“I’m really excited to be joining the Crusaders for the 2025 season and eager to test myself in a new environment,” O’Connor expressed. “Throughout my career, I have heard a lot about the Crusaders’ culture and innovation, so experiencing it firsthand and learning a new approach to the game is something I really look forward to.”
Crusaders head coach Rob Penney praised O’Connor as a “world-class and ambitious athlete.” He revealed that they reached out to him as soon as they learned he was available, believing they could offer him a fresh and challenging opportunity.
“We have two exciting and talented players in Rivez and Taha, and James brings a maturity that will complement them exceptionally well. With his extensive international experience and participation in various overseas competitions, we are eager to see what James can contribute from his 17 seasons of professional football. He’s also a competitor and ambitious, ensuring there will be weekly competition for the number 10 jersey.”
O’Connor is expected to join the Crusaders shortly before the team’s first pre-season match, with the date and opponent to be revealed later this month.
