Island’s Alcohol Trade Sparks Community Outcry

Residents of Koro Island are expressing concern over the illegal sale and consumption of alcohol in local villages, linking it to the increase in violence against women and children. Tevita Vunileba, chairman of the island’s crime prevention committee, highlighted that social issues on the island have worsened due to excessive alcohol consumption.

“We are alarmed by the increasing incidents of violence against our women and children,” he stated, emphasizing that this rise can be attributed to the overconsumption of alcohol. While he does not advocate for a complete ban on alcohol, Vunileba believes its availability should be restricted.

He pointed out that both mainland traders and some islanders are contributing to the problem. Offenders have been cautioned, and family members of those caught in the black market will be subject to investigation based on the committee’s discussions.

Moreover, Vunileba identified the use of marijuana as another factor contributing to physical abuse, noting that the committee has received reports from worried villagers. “It’s encouraging to see people speaking up about these issues. This is a serious matter. Drinking often begins on Sundays and continues into the week, showing a lack of respect for the day,” he added.

Justice Minister Siromi Turaga stressed the importance of responsible alcohol consumption and urged individuals to follow the correct procedures when establishing businesses, respecting village and district regulations.
