Letirina Lutu’s dream of an official marriage became a reality this week, when a civil ceremony was held by the Justice Ministry.
Hailing from Vanuabalavu, Ms. Lutu wed her long-time partner, Joseva Tuitubou, in a modest ceremony at Nasau Hall. The event was attended by villagers and a delegation from the Justice Ministry, which was visiting Koro Island.
“He (Joseva) was in the village hall when the ministry representatives informed us they were providing the service,” Ms. Lutu shared. “Initially, I thought he was joking, but once I saw he was serious, I happily agreed.”
The couple has two children together. Mr. Tuitubou expressed his gratitude for the opportunity provided by the ministry.
“We were planning a civil marriage in December, but we needed to save for the trip to the mainland (Viti Levu),” he explained. “One of our challenges was the cost of over $200 for boat fares, plus accommodation at a relative’s home before returning to Koro. The entire trip and a week’s stay on the mainland could exceed $1000.”
The ceremony was conducted by Deputy Registrar General Viliame Kubunaceva, who noted that the ministry is expanding the Births, Deaths, and Marriages services to Fiji’s maritime region and highlands, with this initiative commencing this week.
