Island in Crisis: Alcohol’s Dark Shadow on Community Safety

Residents of two districts on Koro Island are expressing concern over the illegal sale and consumption of alcohol in their villages, linking it to an increase in violence against women and children. Tevita Vunileba, chairman of the Koro Island crime prevention committee, noted that social issues on the island have worsened due to high levels of alcohol consumption.

He emphasized their apprehension regarding the rise in violence towards women and children, attributing this to excessive drinking. While he does not advocate for a complete ban on alcohol, Vunileba insists that its consumption should be regulated.

He highlighted the problem of alcohol being smuggled from the mainland to the island, as well as local sources contributing to the issue. Offenders have been warned, and the committee plans to investigate the families of those caught participating in the black market.

Additionally, Vunileba pointed out that marijuana use also contributes to physical abuse, and the committee has received anonymous tips from concerned community members. He commended residents for speaking out on this pressing issue, noting that some individuals drink throughout the weekend into the following week, showing a lack of respect for traditional Sunday observances.

Justice Minister Siromi Turaga echoed these sentiments, stating that excessive alcohol consumption is detrimental and urging people to follow proper business setup procedures that consider village and district regulations.
