Island Community Battles Rising Alcohol Crisis and Violence

Residents of two districts on Koro Island are expressing concerns over the illegal sale and consumption of alcohol in their villages, linking it to an increase in violence against women and children. Tevita Vunileba, chairman of the island’s crime prevention committee, indicated that escalating social issues on the island are being worsened by excessive drinking.

“We are alarmed by the increasing incidents of violence against our women and children,” he remarked, emphasizing that these incidents stem from high levels of alcohol consumption. While he does not advocate for a complete ban on alcohol, he believes that its consumption should be regulated.

Vunileba pointed to illegal trade from the mainland to the island as a contributing factor, as well as local sellers. He noted that those caught engaging in the black market will see their families investigated. Additionally, he highlighted that the use of marijuana also contributes to physical abuse, and the committee has received reports from concerned community members.

“It is encouraging that people are voicing their concerns,” he stated. “This is a serious issue. Individuals are consuming alcohol on Sundays and sometimes continuing into the week, showing a lack of respect for traditional Sunday practices.”

Justice Minister Siromi Turaga echoed these concerns, stating that excessive alcohol consumption should be discouraged, and urging individuals to follow proper business establishment processes, in accordance with village and district regulations.
