“Is the Pacific Islands Forum Ready to Stand on Its Own?”

Mark Brown, the chair of the Pacific Islands Forum (PIF), addressed Foreign Affairs Ministers from the region during their meeting in Suva on Friday, emphasizing the need for independence from external goodwill. In his opening remarks at the 2024 Forum Foreign Ministers Meeting, Mr. Brown highlighted the growing geostrategic interests impacting the region.

He pointed out the ongoing climate crisis that worsens annually, along with newly emerging challenges such as cyber threats and transnational crime. Mr. Brown stressed the importance of regional political solidarity, saying that it is crucial for the forum to respond collectively when one member needs assistance.

He praised the ministers for taking the time to discuss how to strengthen shared priorities amidst these pressures. “We can no longer rest on our laurels and depend on the goodwill of others,” he stated. He called for a more strategic and proactive approach to ensure that partners align with their goals and aspirations.

As he concluded his chairmanship, Mr. Brown expressed gratitude to the ministers for their support and transparency over the past 18 months, stating it had been an honor to serve in this capacity for the Cook Islands.
