The ocean is a vital resource for many Pacific island nations, yet it remains absent from the official agenda of the Conference of Parties (COP).
Dr. Sivendra Michael, the Permanent Secretary for Environment, expresses optimism about incorporating ocean-related topics into discussions at the upcoming World Climate Conference. He notes that while “ocean” has not been a standalone agenda item at COP, discussions have historically integrated oceanic issues into various negotiation tracks.
“Adapting to the new forms of climate change requires us to adjust the ways in which we utilize our ocean and marine resources. While the ocean is a crucial topic, it has not been listed as a primary agenda item,” Dr. Michael stated.
He emphasizes the importance of showcasing the ocean’s critical role in climate systems and global environmental sustainability.
“We are working to establish clear positions for the Pacific region, ensuring that we can engage meaningfully with our negotiation partners and seek to have our perspectives reflected in the texts discussed during the meetings,” he added.
