Is It Time to Ban Phones for Kids Under 18?

The Standing Committee on Justice, Law, and Human Rights has received a proposal for new legislation that would prohibit individuals aged 18 and under from owning a phone. This suggestion was introduced during discussions on Child Care and Protection, Child Justice, and National Disaster Risk Management Bills at the Fiji Football Academy in Labasa.

Committee chairman Ratu Rakuita Vakalalabure noted that the proposal has been raised in several communities, particularly in the Western and Northern divisions, due to concerns over the negative influences that phones can have on children. He indicated that the recommendation sparked considerable debate and gathered mixed opinions from the public, particularly from parents and guardians advocating for the restriction.

Proponents believe that such a measure would help limit children’s access to inappropriate content, including pornography, and prevent involvement in other illicit activities. Deepak Chand, an advisory council representative, expressed strong support for the initiative, emphasizing the need for parents and guardians to remain vigilant about their children’s online activities.

Chand highlighted the dangers of unrestricted internet access, urging families to monitor the content that their children are consuming. He explained that the suggestion to raise the legal age for certain activities reflects ongoing concerns regarding youth safety. While the proposal has gained support, it also faces opposition and challenges.

Moving forward, he emphasized the importance of striking a balance between ensuring safety and providing opportunities for young people, so that any changes made are both practical and beneficial.
