“Is It Time for a New Era in Fijian Politics?”

Opposition MP Ketan Lal has expressed that while Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka’s intentions to participate in the 2026 General Election are commendable, Fiji is in need of a new generation of leaders. Lal acknowledged the Prime Minister’s achievements but criticized his leadership, arguing that Fiji has not experienced the progress it urgently requires.

Lal stated, “We find ourselves at a point where bold, forward-thinking ideas are needed to tackle our complex challenges, such as economic recovery and climate change.” He pointed out that many Fijians are seeking genuine change, with some leaving the country for better opportunities, while essential infrastructure projects are facing considerable delays.

He further suggested that Rabuka’s continued presence in politics stifles the emergence of young leaders and fresh ideas. Lal emphasized that if the Prime Minister genuinely supports empowering youth and women, stepping down would demonstrate his dedication to nurturing that leadership.

Lal urged Rabuka to take the honorable step of retiring, allowing a new generation to lead Fiji’s future. He concluded, “By doing so, he would leave a legacy not only of service but also of selflessness, prioritizing the country’s long-term progress and growth. It’s time for a new vision, new energy, and new leadership in Fiji, and the younger generation is ready to provide it.”

FijiLive has reached out to the Office of the Prime Minister for their response to these comments.
