Investigation Wraps Up: What Will the Hibiscus Festival Reveal?

An independent investigation into harassment allegations arising from the crowning night of the Hibiscus festival has concluded. The findings are now under review by the Ministry of Local Government. Minister Maciu Nalumisa confirmed this development but did not provide additional details on the investigation’s results.

Minister Nalumisa stated that the investigation involved interviews with all relevant parties, including committee members and witnesses, in accordance with council policies. The inquiry was carried out by an independent panel that consisted of the Chair of Suva City Council, a legal expert, an external event management and public safety specialist, and a representative from a human rights or gender-based violence advocacy organization.

“We are committed to ensuring the investigation was impartial, transparent, and conducted professionally, in full compliance with all legal and regulatory standards,” Nalumisa remarked. He also noted that a separate police investigation is ongoing, and the Ministry is prepared to cooperate fully with law enforcement throughout the process.

Background information reveals that allegations of sexual harassment emerged after a contestant reported feeling uncomfortable, with claims of inappropriate touching made during the post-crowning cocktail event at the festival’s VIP tent.
