Investigation Underway: Allegations of Harassment Rock Miss Hibiscus Contest

Police are currently investigating a sexual harassment complaint made by a contestant of the Miss Hibiscus pageant. Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro confirmed that a report was filed at the Totogo Police Station last Friday, and an investigation is underway.

The allegations emerged last week when a contestant told the Fiji Sun about an incident during the crowning night on September 7, where she claimed to have been “jabbed on the back” by a guest at the event. This prompted the Minister for Local Government, Maciu Nalumisa, to initiate an internal investigation into the matter.

Minister Nalumisa stated that a team is looking into the incident to determine what transpired that night, emphasizing the need for professionalism to protect the interests and well-being of all pageant contestants. He expressed anticipation that the investigation would be concluded within the week.

Last week, Mr. Nalumisa reached out to Tevita Boseiwaqa, the special administration chairperson of the Suva City Council, who is also involved in the investigating team. The contestant has formally reported the incident to the police, initially planning to wait for a witness who is currently abroad but decided to proceed with the complaint after discussions with her family.

The contestant alleges that a man, who appeared to be intoxicated, jabbed her in the back, and she reported the incident to event officials immediately. Minister Nalumisa remarked that alcohol consumption should not be used to justify inappropriate behavior.
