The Minister for Home Affairs, Pio Tikoduadua, has committed to a thorough investigation into a police brutality incident that occurred over the weekend in Nausori. The case involves Vilikesa Bari, a final-year maritime student at the Fiji National University, who was reportedly assaulted by a police officer, leading to his hospitalization due to serious injuries, including a broken jaw, which has made eating difficult for him.

Minister Tikoduadua stated, “I’ve been informed about it, we’ll investigate it fully,” emphasizing that he would ensure a comprehensive inquiry into the matter. The situation escalated when Bari’s family alleged that the officer visited him at the Nausori Health Centre, offering $500 in an attempt to bribe him into silence regarding the assault.

On Tuesday, the police acknowledged that the misconduct of a few officers has negatively affected public trust and confidence in the force. Acting Commissioner of Police, Sakeo Raikaci, noted the detrimental effect of recent accusations of abuse and poor service on community relations. He affirmed the police’s commitment to service and their intent to take necessary disciplinary actions to restore public confidence.

In a reassuring message, ACP Raikaci expressed gratitude to the community for their ongoing support while recognizing the challenges faced in maintaining trust. He highlighted the dedication of officers across all divisions in serving the community.

This incident highlights the importance of accountability and transparency within law enforcement. While it raises serious concerns, the commitment from authorities to address the issue is a positive step towards ensuring justice and rebuilding trust with the community.

In light of the circumstances, the focus on addressing misconduct could pave the way for strengthening the relationship between the police force and the citizens they serve, ultimately benefiting community safety and trust in the judicial system.
