Investigation into FICAC Commissioner Sparks Controversy

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has stated that the newly appointed Commissioner for the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption, Barbara Malimali, does not need to step down as investigations are ongoing. In a media briefing, Rabuka emphasized that her current situation is unrelated to her appointment.

He mentioned that the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) is managing this issue, which he described as separate. “If she did something, she needs to front up,” he added.

The Office of the DPP has transferred the investigation file regarding Malimali to the Director of the Criminal Investigations Department for completion. This decision followed discussions between Acting DPP Nancy Tikoisuva and Deputy DPP John Rabuku, who has been assigned to oversee the inquiry.

“A decision was reached that the investigation into this matter was incomplete; therefore, the file has been sent to the Director CID with recommendations to finalize the investigation,” Rabuka stated.

The Office of the DPP has indicated that more information will be provided once the review concludes and the investigation file is returned for further action.

In terms of context, Malimali is under investigation for alleged abuse of office related to her previous role as Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, according to FICAC.
