The investigation into the boxing incident involving the late Ubayd Haider is expected to conclude this week, according to Edwin Wainiqolo, the chairperson of the Commission of Inquiry. In a recent interview, Wainiqolo mentioned that they are currently in the final stages of the investigation, with only one individual left to be questioned: Fredy Chand, a former promoter for the South Pacific Boxing Promotion.
Wainiqolo confirmed that Mohammed Shameem has already been interviewed. He expressed gratitude towards Chand, who has voluntarily made himself available to assist with the inquiry, despite residing overseas. The investigation team had planned to interview Chand earlier this week, but logistical challenges due to time zone differences delayed the meeting.
Once all testimonies have been gathered, the findings will be submitted directly to Jese Saukuru, the Minister of Youth and Sports. Should further clarification be needed regarding the findings, Wainiqolo indicated that a press conference would be held to address any relevant issues.
This investigation marks an important step towards understanding the circumstances surrounding the tragic event, and the transparent process underscores a commitment to accountability in the sports community.
Overall, the nearing conclusion of the inquiry may provide much-needed closure for those affected by the incident and help ensure that such tragedies are prevented in the future.
