The investigation into the boxing incident that led to the tragic death of Ubayd Haider is expected to be completed this week, as confirmed by Edwin Wainiqolo, chairperson of the Commission of Inquiry. During a recent interview, Wainiqolo stated that only one individual remains to be questioned: former South Pacific Boxing Promotion promoter Fredy Chand.
Wainiqolo noted that the team has already interviewed Mohammed Shameem, and he expressed gratitude towards Chand for willingly assisting with the inquiry. Though the interview with Chand was initially planned for this week, scheduling complications due to time differences have delayed it. Chand, residing overseas, has committed to participating in the investigation, which demonstrates his willingness to contribute to clarifying the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Once the investigation concludes, its findings will be forwarded directly to the Minister of Youth and Sports, Jese Saukuru. Should further clarification regarding the findings be necessary, a press conference will be organized to address any outstanding issues.
This investigation underscores the importance of accountability and transparency in the sports community, aiming to bring closure to those affected by the unfortunate event. The commitment of involved parties to cooperate reflects a collective desire for improvement and adherence to safety standards in boxing moving forward.
