An independent investigation into harassment allegations during the crowning night of the Hibiscus festival has concluded. The findings are now under review by the Ministry of Local Government. Minister for Local Government Maciu Nalumisa confirmed this but did not provide additional details on the investigation’s outcomes.
Nalumisa stated that the investigation involved interviews with relevant parties, including committee members and witnesses, adhering to council policies. The investigation was led by an independent panel that included the Chair of Suva City Council, a legal expert, an external event management specialist, and a representative from a human rights or gender-based violence advocacy organization.
“We are committed to ensuring that the investigation was impartial, transparent, and conducted professionally, meeting all legal and regulatory standards,” Nalumisa remarked.
He also mentioned that a separate police investigation is ongoing, and the Ministry will cooperate fully with law enforcement.
Background information reveals that allegations of sexual harassment came to light after a contestant reported feeling uncomfortable, with claims of ‘groping’ occurring during the post-crowning cocktail at the festival’s VIP tent.
