International Day for Indentured Laborers? A Proposal to Remember the Girmitya

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Professor Biman Prasad, has put forward a compelling proposal for the establishment of an international day dedicated to the recognition of the history and struggles of indentured Indian laborers, commonly referred to as girmitya. He advocates for global acknowledgment of their sacrifices and suffering, emphasizing the need for such recognition in the context of historical awareness.

Addressing the “Interdisciplinary Perspective on the Indian Diaspora: The Way Forward” conference remotely from the University of Calcutta, Professor Prasad highlighted the long-lasting impacts of the indenture system, which subjected laborers to harsh conditions during their transport to British colonies. He acknowledged their resilience in the face of tremendous adversity, pointing out the deep scars these experiences have left on affected communities.

He also recognized Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ongoing commitment to preserving the history of Girmit through various avenues including research, film, and education. Professor Prasad called for intensified international cooperation to promote a proposal aimed at establishing an International Day on Girmit within the United Nations framework, which could help raise awareness and educate wider audiences about this significant part of history.

Additionally, he remarked on the strengthening ties between Fiji and India under the current Fijian government, noting high-level exchanges and collaborative initiatives across sectors such as health, education, and trade. This reinforces the cultural connections and shared heritage of the two nations.

Professor Prasad’s call for an international day underscores the importance of acknowledging the legacies of the Indian diaspora, advocating for unity and understanding among global communities as a way to honor their collective histories and experiences.
